Amongst the Blackberries

Amongst the blackberries today, I found a little girl.

I saw her – a little girl, out blackberrying with her family. Excited about apple and blackberry pie for dinner. Eating as many blackberries as she saved.

Right there, in the mess of thorns and prickles, determined to find only the ripest and the sweetest, no matter the cost. Strong-willed, stubborn, a little wild. Determined to have her way.

Not so different from my own little girl.

A little girl who used to be me.

And I realised, very suddenly, that I am not who I think I am. All amongst the blackberries.
